المحكمة العليا للولايات المتحدة (SCOTUS) هي أعلى هيئة قضائية في الولايات المتحدة، وتعتبر واحدة من أركان النظام السياسي الأمريكي. تأسست المحكمة في عام 1789 بموجب المادة الثالثة من دستور الولايات المتحدة. وتلعب المحكمة العليا دورًا حيويًا في تفسير الدستور وفي حسم النزاعات القانونية التي قد تنشأ بين الولايات، أو بين الولايات والحكومة الفيدرالية، أو بين المواطنين والحكومة.
تتكون المحكمة العليا من تسعة قضاة، يعينهم الرئيس بموافقة مجلس الشيوخ. هؤلاء القضاة يشغلون مناصبهم مدى الحياة، ما لم يختاروا التقاعد أو يتم إزالتهم عن طريق الإقالة. يتولى رئيس المحكمة، الذي يختاره الرئيس، إدارة المحكمة العليا.
مهام المحكمة العليا تتضمن مراجعة القوانين وتفسيرها لضمان توافقها مع الدستور. إذا قضت المحكمة بأن قانونًا ما غير دستوري، فإن القانون يعتبر باطلًا. تُعرف المحكمة بقراراتها التاريخية التي شكلت جوانب عدة من المجتمع الأمريكي، منها قضية براون ضد مجلس التعليم التي أنهت الفصل العنصري في المدارس، وقضية رو ضد ويد التي تعلقت بحق الإجهاض.

The Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) is the highest judicial body in the United States and is considered one of the pillars of the American political system. The court was established in 1789 under Article III of the United States Constitution. The Supreme Court plays a crucial role in interpreting the Constitution and in resolving legal disputes that may arise between states, or between states and the federal government, or between citizens and the government.
The Supreme Court consists of nine justices, appointed by the President with the Senate’s consent. These justices hold their positions for life unless they choose to retire or are removed through impeachment. The Chief Justice, selected by the President, manages the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court’s responsibilities include reviewing and interpreting laws to ensure their alignment with the Constitution. If the court rules that a law is unconstitutional, the law is considered void. The court is known for its landmark decisions that have shaped various aspects of American society, including Brown v. Board of Education, which ended racial segregation in schools, and Roe v. Wade, which dealt with abortion rights.
