Michael Waltz is a U.S. Congressman from Florida, and the first “Green Beret” to be elected to Congress. Born on January 31, 1974, in Boynton Beach, Florida, he grew up in Jacksonville. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in international studies from the Virginia Military Institute and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He served in the Special Forces during multiple combat tours in Afghanistan, the Middle East, and Africa, earning four Bronze Stars.
Waltz is considered one of Congress’s most hawkish members regarding China, believing that the Chinese Communist Party is in a cold war with the U.S. In 2021, he was the first member of Congress to call for a full boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing over what he described as the genocide and forced internment of ethnic minorities in China.
In November 2024, President-elect Donald Trump announced he would appoint Waltz as National Security Advisor in his second administration.
