Basavareddy, a highly respected and influential figure in ancient India, was born into a Hindu family in South India in the 12th century. He was a symbol of purity and devotion, a spiritual leader and social reformer known for founding the Lingayat movement, which revolves around the worship of Lord Shiva.
Basavareddy’s life was filled with challenges as he fought against social injustice and caste discrimination. He believed in equality among all people, regardless of caste or gender. His poetic and intellectual works, known as Vachanas, are still studied and read today. These Vachanas reflect his spiritual and philosophical vision of life and encourage people to adopt a simple and ethical way of living.
Not only was Basavareddy a philosopher, but he was also a social reformer. He established a community that embraced principles of social justice, promoting education and gender equality.
