In 1947, ancient rock paintings were discovered in Jebel Ran in the city of Al-Ula in northwestern Saudi Arabia, which is now known as the “Mada’in Saleh” site. Though they replicate scenes from daily life and human activities, their significance extends beyond mere beautiful art. These paintings are among the oldest written records that illustrate the way of life, social interaction, and trade in that period. The paintings date back to the Nabataean civilization, one of the ancient civilizations that lived in the region before Christ.
The site is believed to have been an important trading hub connecting southern Arabia with the north, where markets and trade exchanges were held. Intriguingly, these paintings also reflect a form of cultural communication with other cultures, shown through a blend of artistic styles influenced by those civilizations.
