نجيب محفوظ، أديب مصري، يُعد من أبرز روائيي القرن العشرين. وُلد في حي الجمالية بالقاهرة عام 1911. كل من يقرأ كتاباته يُدهش من القدرة الفائقة على تصوير الحياة اليومية والطبقات الاجتماعية بمصر. بدأ مسيرته الأدبية بروايات تاريخية، إلا أنه تحول لاحقًا إلى استكشاف قضايا اجتماعية وسياسية ودينية معقدة.
كانت ثلاثية القاهرة – “بين القصرين”، “قصر الشوق”، و”السكرية” – من بين أبرز أعماله، حيث قدّم من خلالها صورة حية لتطور المجتمع المصري من خلال أعين عائلة واحدة. يتميز أسلوب محفوظ بالجمع بين الواقعية والرمزية، مما جعل كتبه تجد صدى واسع لدى القارئ العربي والعالمي.
في عام 1988، حصل على جائزة نوبل في الأدب، ليكون أول كاتب عربي يحصل على هذا التكريم الرفيع. عانى نجيب من محاولة اغتيال عام 1994 بسبب آرائه الجريئة ومواقفه المثيرة للجدل. رغم ذلك، استمر في الكتابة حتى وفاته عام 2006.

Naguib Mahfouz, an Egyptian novelist, is hailed as one of the most prominent writers of the 20th century. Born in Cairo’s Gamaliya district in 1911, his works are renowned for their vivid portrayal of daily life and social strata in Egypt. He began his literary career with historical novels but later delved into complex social, political, and religious themes.
His Cairo Trilogy—”Palace Walk,” “Palace of Desire,” and “Sugar Street”—stands out as one of his most significant works, offering a vivid portrait of the evolution of Egyptian society through the eyes of a single family. Mahfouz’s style uniquely blends realism with symbolism, resonating deeply with both Arab and global audiences.
In 1988, he became the first Arabic writer to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. In 1994, Mahfouz survived an assassination attempt due to his bold views and controversial stances. Despite the challenges, he continued to write until his passing in 2006.
