On a quiet Wednesday evening, the village of Cetinje in Montenegro was rocked by a horrifying incident that left the entire nation in shock. In a moment of madness, a drunken man opened fire indiscriminately in a local restaurant, killing 12 people, including two children. The serene atmosphere of the village quickly turned into a scene of chaos and terror.
The events began when the attacker got into an argument with a customer in the restaurant after consuming large amounts of alcohol. He returned home to fetch his firearm and came back to the restaurant to start shooting. The first victims were in the restaurant, where he killed the owner, his two sons, and his brother, as well as the attacker’s sister. The rampage didn’t stop there; the attacker continued to shoot at other locations in the village, resulting in more fatalities.
The police intervened quickly but initially struggled to locate the attacker. After a hours-long chase, the attacker was cornered and shot himself in the head, dying on the way to the hospital. This incident was one of the worst mass shootings in Montenegro’s history, prompting the government to declare a three-day national mourning period to honor the victims.
This tragic event has raised questions about the country’s gun laws, with the Prime Minister pledging to tighten regulations on firearm possession. He also called for a review of the main challenges in detecting and confiscating illegal weapons, as well as the recruitment of additional police officers.
